Oposisi Biner dan Representasi Kolonial dalam Novel De Stille Kracht: Analisis Struktural Lévi-Strauss

This study aims to analyze the structure of binary oppositions in the novel De Stille Kracht by Louis Couperus and their implications for meaning and colonial ideology. The approach employed is Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralism combined with a postcolonial perspective. The research method is descriptive qualitative, with analysis focusing on characters, plot, and setting. The findings reveal the presence of exclusive binary oppositions, such as realism–mysticism and altruism–egoism, which shape both conflict and value hierarchies. In addition, there are non-exclusive oppositions between life in Labuwangi and Garut, representing the transformation of characters’ identities. These oppositions function not only as narrative structures but also as a medium for representing colonial ideology, highlighting the tension between Western rationality and local realities. This study contributes to strengthening colonial literary studies by demonstrating that binary oppositions can serve as an analytical tool to uncover power relations, identity crises, and the internal fractures of colonialism.
