Strategi Penerjemahan Nama Diri dan Kontras Ideologi: Analisis Perbandingan Terjemahan Animal Farm

This study aims to identify the differences in translation ideology between two Indonesian versions of Animal Farm by George Orwell: Binatangisme, translated by Mahbub Djunaidi (1983), and Animal Farm, translated by M. Dhanil Herdiman and Laila Qadria (2021). This translation ideology is reflected in the use of strategies for translating proper names. Aixela classifies proper names as Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) due to their embedded cultural, historical, and emotional meanings. Therefore, translating proper names has become a significant challenge in literary translation. Nyangeri and Wangari identify six strategies for translating proper names, synthesized from the translation strategy continuum proposed by Davies and the translation model by Van Collie. This descriptive qualitative study reveals that the translation by Herdiman and Qadria tends toward a foreignization ideology at a higher level (92%), with preservation as the most dominant strategy (59.8%), compared to Mahbub Djunaidi’s translation (86%), where the dominant strategy is non-translation plus additional explanation (32.6%). In terms of domestication ideology, Mahbub Djunaidi’s translation shows a higher level (14%) compared to Herdiman and Qadria’s translation (8%). Although both translations demonstrate a tendency toward foreignization, the application of foreignization and domestication strategies in handling proper names shows varying degrees of intensity.
