Fungsi Naratif pada Hikayat Bayan Budiman: Kajian Naratologi Vladimir Propp

Abstract

This study examines the narrative structure of Hikayat Bayan Budiman using Vladimir Propp’s narratological perspective. This study is important because research on classical Malay literature generally focuses on philological aspects and moral values, while studies that map narrative structure based on story functions and character roles remain limited. This study aims to identify the narrative functions from Vladimir Propp’s 31 functions that appear in Hikayat Bayan Budiman and to map the distribution of character roles according to the concept of the sphere of action. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques, involving the classification of narrative units such as events, character actions, and plot into Propp’s functions, followed by an analysis of role distribution. The results show that the story is structured in a sequence of functions α – β – a – B – γ – E – G – I – K. The conflict presented is not a physical struggle but rather an inner and moral conflict, particularly the anxiety of Khoja Maimun’s wife due to the temptation of the Prince. The study concludes that Vladimir Propp’s narratological theory is relevant for analyzing classical Malay literature, with adaptive application in accordance with ethical and religious contexts.
